Statement

Hilary Hutchison uses natural forms for the inspiration for her work.  In gouache drawings, cement reliefs, and mixed media animal sculptures she explores gesture, movement, and the growth of organic life.

Natural subjects have always been of interest to Hutchison.  In observation of natural life, be it what exists under the water, beneath the earth, or under the skin, the artist is fascinated with the repetition and connectedness that exists between nature’s forms.

The “Suspended Growth Series” focuses on the expressive potential of subjects such as overlapping roots, branches, seaweed, muscles over bone, as the source of animation and gesture.  In the sculpture Hutchison uses cement as the medium.  As a cast or direct sculpture material, cement is manipulated, combined with gauze, string, and cement fragments, to mimic vessels, roots, and the bulging intricacies of the landscape.

In creating the animal sculptures, Hutchison assembled natural materials with plaster fragments and modeled forms.  The anatomy of bones mimics the anatomy of the twigs, just as each sculpture’s plaster fragments reflect the landscape.  Drawing from imagined and representational form, Hutchison is interested in creating an architecture influenced by the layers of life, landscape, and memory.
