Growing up in what was a
rural area of southern New Jersey, nature played an important role in my
life and continues to inspire my artwork today. Although I currently
reside in a suburban setting, I spend many hours in the outdoors, gardening
through spring and summer, walking miles with my dog, always looking.
Without sounding sentimental---
the forces I observe in nature; be it the early life emerging during spring,
the energy expressed through the peak of summer’s production, or the gestures
of stark tree limbs against a winter sky, are never exhausted as subjects
for my art.
The forms I choose for my
sculpture could be the plants of land or water---relating to biology or
anatomy. A budding tree, protruding fungus, the lyricism and gesture
of life and its repetition of organic forms---these are all observations
that I bring to my work.
As an artist working in the
traditional methods of sculpture, my work is made using plaster or clay,
as direct mediums or cast into cement. I have always loved these
materials. They can be modeled, carved, fragments can be assembled,
and its textures are endless.
Drawing from imagined and
representational form, I am interested in creating a visual language influenced
by the layers of life, landscape, and memory. |
